Sending emails from your site through Gmail

With some additional settings adding in Sytist version 1.3, you can now send emails from your website trough the gmail SMTP servers if you have a Gmail account. You can also use other third party SMTP services, but here I will go over sending through Gmail.

A couple of things to note:

1) It seems to take a second or two longer when an email is sent.

2) Any emails sent from your website will show up in the Sent messages in your Gmail account.

To set it up, go to Settings -> Mail Sending Settings in your Sytist admin.

Settings:

  • Mail Sending Function: SMTP PHPMailer
  • SMTP host:                       smtp.gmail.com
  • SMTP Username:      Your Gmail address
  • SMTP password:   Your  Gmail password.
  • SMTP encryption:             tls
  • SMTP Port:                        587

You are also going to make some adjustments to your Gmail account. Go to this page:
https://myaccount.google.com/security

Be sure 2-step verification is OFF.

Scroll all the way down and look for "Allow less secure apps". Set that to ON.

After that, in your Sytist admin, go to Settings -> Mail Sending Settings and send a test email from there. You will probably see a  long message. Doesn't mean it is an error. Check and see if you received the email.

If not, you may need to go to this page and click continue:
https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha

Then try another test email.
