Square Payments Not Showing Taxes

I've been using Square for a while now but this is the first 'year end' where my accountant is going through the books. Apparently purchases made in Sytist that use Square as the payment option do not show taxes in the totals!

On the Square side, purchases just come through as "No description @$160.10" and similar. Taxes are all marked as $0.00 so I'm looking at a lot of homework to sort out my books :(

Can you check what's happening with the Sytist/Square interaction so this data is reported please? If there's anything I could do on my end to make it work correctly please let me know!

Hey Michael,
This has been a discussion in the past. The communication between square and sytist is very limited. I too would like that fixed. Every month For sales tax I am having to run a report in sytist and run a report in square and do the math to figure out how much sales tax I owe. It's can be a PIA. The same issue comes into play when you have to refund a customer because the transaction id# does not translate between the two platforms. Hopefully that helps some.

Square is taking the payment total. It does not separate the tax, shipping, etc ... like every other payment option.

You can get your tax total in the Reports section.

Tim, I see in the Square Developer Portal that my 'API Version is 23 versions behind. Please consider upgrading.' I'm on a version from December 2018 so I guess it's almost 2 years old.

This also comes with the warning that 'Changing your API version may break your implementation.' Are there any concerns from your end or can I just click the upgrade?

Would that possibly restore / add any functionality to the connection with Sytist?

If it isn't broken then don't change it.

That's my point though - it is broken. The tax isn't coming through and with the hiccups in Sytist not always charging the tax I have no idea what is accurate. We're sort of faking it by calculating backwards from the grand total, but when the two sides are not reporting the same information it's giving my accountant some real frustrations.

It's probable that with the upgrades to their API you could get the data to flow through the system. I imagine that's a bit of work on your end, but I'd say it's important work to get done...

A follow-up for this topic from Square: their API does support breakdowns of the items in fact. The admin there referred me to https://developer.squareup.com/docs/orders-api/what-it-does which may be helpful. Please put this update on your to-do list Tim, it's a much-needed functionality.
