Blue Host Cron Won't Work: They Say Shared Access The Issue?

I tried to set up my cron on blue host.
I tried both the php link and the q link.
Neither worked. I consulted tech support and this is what they said:

From blue host:
"I could see that you are looking to access /usr/bin/php which is not possible in shared account which is the reason you get access denied error"

"If you are looking to access /usr/bin/php -q file in current account , this is not possible since it required root access. Since you donot have root access , you get the access denied error. You will need a VPS account to run /usr/bin/php -q /home2/alisonu9/public_html/sytist/sy-admin/sy-cron.php
command"

I don't really know what any of this means or how to communicate to them what I need. Can you advise please?

A shared account is where you are not the only one on a particular server. I also have a shared account and I have never been able to get it to work reliably on my Bluehost account. Sometimes it works perfectly and will do so for several months at a time. Then, with nothing changed on my end, it will send me an email with this error:
Could not exec shell '/bin/bash' with errno = 2. In fact, sometimes it will send me 30 or 40 duplicate emails even though I may have only one or two notifications to be sent. Has any Bluehost subscriber ever figured out how to make this work?

It sounds like they are just trying to make you upgrade hosting.

I have never set up a cron job on bluehost, but try these:

php /home2/alisonu9/public_html/sytist/sy-admin/sy-cron.php

Or

php -q /home2/alisonu9/public_html/sytist/sy-admin/sy-cron.php

If neither of those work, the question to ask them is what is the correct PHP binary part for the cron job to use on shared hosting. Say you have the correct "path" but you need the correct binary.

Thank you for giving me the verbiage to use. I'll try that.
I've not been overly thrilled with Blue host- if they don't make it easier to work w/ Sytist you may want to rethink recommending them as a host, - esp if they don't support the cron jobs. :)

Any resolution with this?
I've tried 18 different attempts and none are accepted.
I contacted Bluehost and they told me they don't have binary numbers to give out and referred me to 2 articles that were most unhelpful.
Am I SOL with Bluehost? This is a huge bummer!

Blue host uses cPanel hosting which has a cron section to set up cron jobs. With them being such a large host, I would suspect someone where would know how to set up a cron job. It should not require upgrading hosting or anything.

Running into the same problem.  Has anyone had any success setting up a cron job w Blue Host?  It ran just fine when it was Hostmonster.  I am ridiculously challenged trying to do anything with coding.  I can find the cpanel but cant find where to set up cron jobs.  Have not contacted customer service yet.  Trying to get more info before going that route.

Any have any luck w this?  I was a hostmonster user who got transitioned to them - old as dirt and coding challenged! Hoping to retire at the end of the season.  I would really prefer finding a way to make it work vs changing hosts. In the cron job area and tried a bunch of different options but so far no luck.  Back on the road again tomorrow but will try customer support Monday.

You will have to reach out to bluehost to get your cron job working properly. Or use a 3rd party service like https://cron-job.org/en/

Im going to try cron-job first.  Just not coding savvy at all.  Could you tell me the line of text I need to use with cron-job?  I know it varies depending on the site host.  Unsure what I would need for that.

As always - thank you for all your help!
