Which Folders Need Which Permissions?

Hello there,
I am still in the process of setting up everything, uploading some test files and so far so good but I get intermittent problems with folder permissions on my server.
I don't want to keep everything on "777" so I try to set as many folders as possible on "755" but at the moment it is a hit-and-miss situation as to when it will work and when some feature will fail to do what it should.
So is it possible to get a list of folders and the required settings so that Sytist runs smoothly? That would help a lot!

During the installation process, did it say permissions needed to be changed on the folders? Nowadays you generally don't have to change folder permissions (like when suPHP is used on the server).
But if it did say you needed to change folder permissions then the following folders would need 777 permissions:
sy-misc
sy-photos
sy-phpsessions
sy-tmp
sy-upload

Hello Tim,
thanks for the answer. It printed an error message at begin of installation and I changed the permission to the main folder to 777. Otherwise I tried to leave as many as possible on 755 but Sytist behaved erratically and did not do what it was supposed to do on numerous occasions. I'll try to change these folders and hope it will work, thanks!
By the way: what do you mean with suPHP? Never heard that before, is that something I can relay to my hosting provider?

suPHP - http://www.suphp.org/Home.html
suPHP is a module that can be installed by the host for security ... making it so that folders only need be 755 and files 644 to be writeable by the account owner's scripts ... and other things.

Thanks, I'll shoot them a message. Apparently Sytist is not able to create directories in its home folder because of permission problems. When I create a site it appears in the admin panel and I am able to alter it but when clicking on "web" it takes me to a "404", telling me that the directory doesn't exist. Does the home directory need a "777", too?

Okay, the hoster replied to me giving me a choice. He said at the moment PHP is running as an Apache module and not in CGI mode and I have the choice to change that. Either it stays as it is which is faster and more secure or I change it to CGI mode which is reducing the performance but should take me around the problems with permissions.
At the moment I am tending to option 1 and trying to figure out the permissions. Getting farther than before I am now able to create sites (after changing the main folder to "777") but when adding photos I get this:
Warning: unlink(/www/htdocs/*******/sytist/sy-upload/2014_11_29_Erlangen/Sen_III_S/Pfitzner/074_0290.jpg) [function.unlink]: Permission denied in /www/htdocs/*******/sytist/admin/process-ftp-upload.php on line 322
I had it working in a test on Friday last weak and I think it had something to do with permissions, too. Can you help me with this?

It is actually kind of rare nowadays you have to change permissions to 777. Most hosts have it so folders are writable at 755 and no folder permissions have to be changed. But if you stay on how it is set up now, then you will need to make the main folder writable at 777 and also the folders I listed above.
Also when you FTP upload folder of folders, you will need to change the permission of the folder(s) upload to 777 before processing.

Thanks for the input. As that's too much work I think I will update the .htaccess to let PHP work in CGI mode and hope that everything works out as it should.

Just for information in case anybody finds the same problem: changing the PHP mode on the server via .htaccess worked!

I am having a similar problem.
I am using DreamHost
Sytist is installed, every seems to working fine.
Uploading images (via web) is working great but has a limit of 999 files. I am uploading around 1500 images, the images are small in size, 850px widest.
I tried FTP in the sy-upload folder method, once a press "Process" warning messages come up.
The message is similar to Kathrin Gerner message (the message comes up very fast and disappears, and then it goes to the page with the images, but I dont see any images) see below. I tried changing the folders to permission 777 but it did not help.

When you did the installation, did you have to change any folder permissions for the install to work? If so, change the permissions of the sy-upload folder to 0777 and also after you upload a folder of photos, change that folder to 0777 before processing.

Hi Tim, Thank you for the quick reply.
When I first got the software and tried to install it, I had problems, it said "access denied" when i enter the "url/gallery/install" eventually I got my brother who change some permissions and it installed fine.
I just tried changing permission for sy-upload and also the uploaded image folder and still the same warning messages.
I have just emailed you with details and also a screen capture of the warnings.

Just an update.
Thank you Tim for the quick reply.
The problems was my FTP client (FileZilla) software causing permission issues.
I used another FTP client and it was working fine.
