Hi Tim, it looks like Square are now rolling out the SCA compliant flow for developers.

Do you have a plan to incorporate this into the payment options?

Mail from Square copied below:

What action you need to take
Square has begun rolling out the SCA compliant flow with 3D-Secure 2 (3DS2) as of 1st January 2021. Businesses using Square’s products such as Square Online and Invoices do not need to make any changes as the products have been updated to meet SCA requirements and invoke 3DS2 when necessary.

Businesses, Developers and Partners that use Square’s developer products such as Square Payment Form and the Connect V2 APIs, must ensure their applications are SCA-compliant to minimise the occurrence of declined payments. To achieve compliance, you are required to update Square Payment Form Integration following this guide.

Learn more on our FAQs page here and for further help, speak with our Engineering teams on Square’s Developer forum here.

Hi Tim, hope you are well.

I have received this e-mail from Square this morning regarding SCA implementation for their payment system.

++++++++++++++++++++

Hello Christopher,

We want to remind you that there are a few required steps you need to complete by 1st May 2021 to enable Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) for online payments, as required by the PSD2 (Payment Services Directive 2). If you do not take these steps, you risk facing bank declined payments after 1st May.

What do you need to do?

Businesses and Partners that use Square’s developer products must update their applications to minimise the occurrence of declined payments. This includes those using the Square Payment Form and Connect V2 APIs. To achieve compliance, you are required to update your Square Payment Form integration following this guide.

Businesses using Square Online, Square Online Checkout, and Square Invoices do not need to make any changes as the products have been updated to meet SCA requirements and invoke 3DS2 when necessary.

What is SCA Compliance?

As part of SCA compliance, all businesses that offer online card payments on their website or app (including Invoices) must use at least two methods of authentication to verify payments. This is intended to enhance the security of electronic payments and limit fraud during the checkout.

SCA compliance is a requirement of the second Payment Service Directive (PSD2) as proposed by the European Commission, managed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK. Get helpful information and learn more on the FCA website, UK Finance website, and Square’s FAQ page. If you need further help, speak with our Engineering teams on Square’s Developer Forums.

Thank you for selling with Square.

Do you have any updates on implementation of SCA for the Square payment option? We only seem to have a month remaining before payments may start to be declined.

Hi Tim, FYI it looks like the drop-dead date for SCA implementation for Square has been moved to 1st June. Another e-mail received today as a "final notice". See below.

This is the final reminder that there are a few required steps you need to complete by 1st June 2021 to protect your customers from bank declined payments and chargebacks.
