Sub-category Display

I use subcategories to organize my galleries but there are some that I would like to be visible to the public on my site, and others that I would like to hide (these I use mainly for organization of client proofing galleries).

How do i go about hiding some categories and not others?

Edit the parent category, layouts -> Category Listing Layouts -> "Show sub categories on page above any content." option.

Thanks but I have that already selected.

Have a look at my Galleries page.  

The blank thumbnails are the ones I'd like to hide.  Any suggestions?

Edit those categories and uncheck the "Active Category" option.
