Old Style Gallery Sub Menus

There is an option on pages to add photos and also to create sub galleries and add photos to those sub galleries.  When you click on a sub gallery from the main page the photos of that sub gallery display at the top with text links below the photos that are separated by an icon to the other sub galleries

I would like to be able to use that style on the main page (under the photos of the main page) as currently none of the 'page display layouts' match.  I prefer the simplicity and also to keep consistency through the menus.  I know I will need to create a new layout template but am not sure the coding to create the photo thumbnail view above and the plain text with icons spacing them in the layout below.
