how do i get the custom 404 page to work on my site? is there something i need to do?

Click SETTINGS in the main menu then UNDERNWEATH the left menu click edit .htaccess file.
Copy the following 2 lines and paste it in there and save.
RewriteEngine on
ErrorDocument 404 /404.php
