Passcode Codes

When generating passcodes, are there any characters not to use? We have special characters such as $, !, @, & in the passcodes we generated for a high school. We are now aware a number of clients, when entering their passcode, get a spinning wheel that won't go away, not their photo. I'm guessing this relates to characters that shouldn't be used as every call we've had references a special character in the code.

& and # could possibly cause problems though I have tested using those characters and works fine for me. When are they getting the spinning wheel? After it has accepted the password or before or after the thumbnails have loaded?

From our conversations with client and when we test, the spinning wheel comes up after entering the passcode and striking enter. The wheel spins until the user does something to break out of that routine.
