Hosting On Amazon Or Maybe Google?

I have been reading as many of the posts as I can about using amazon to host/hold/store photos for sites.
I went to amazon and checked the rates and they seemed to be really, really, good.
Almost to good. The prices were so low that I feel compelled to ask around to others.
Right now I have about 39 GB on our site. Next year I would expect we will have even more up there.

When I went to Amazon they seemed to have numbers that were really low. Can I ask what some of you are paying and how large a quantity you have up there.

I saw in my research on this site that one member keeps all of their schools up "forever"
I cannot do this right time due to the excessive cost I would have to pay for the storage.

Some one else I know is using Google to store images...can Sytist use Google ?

I've been told about 80 Gig on Amazon S3 is about $6 per month.

Thanks M Davis
That seems so inexpensive. When I checked for myself I got a very low number as well. That is part of the reason I posted this.
This year my site costs doubled from $250CDN to $500CDN. This is due to the green screen stuff we are doing. The png's are larger than the jpg's.
I expect to need more space yet again next year. Right now my web page is at 90% of capacity and I don't like that.

If understand this correctly I will still require my website to be on "the server" it's on now but I will offload all(?) of the storage of these files to amazon?
There was one poster I read who kept all his or her schools online from past years. That is something I would like to start doing...keeping the past 3 or 4 years up. But with my current provider I would be doubling my costs every year.

Can anyone else chime in with some points?
I really want to take advantage of all that Sytist has to offer.
My biggest problem is that I am the only one in the company that evens begins to understand this stuff and that leaves me with no one to bounce ideas off of.
I read almost every post that goes on this board.
Thanks

Your Webserver install has the gallery files and the database which now has links to your photos on S3 instead of on your local Webserver

We put everything on Amazon S3. That option allows you purchase a small hosting plan (you don't need storage) and the Amazon servers are extremely fast.

I recommend saratogahosting.com, you will get VPS speed at shared hosting pricing.

Using Amazon S3 storage might lead you to keeping more images online than you really need. What I mean is, after 90 days, "any" online sales will drop to near zero. So you will be paying for storage for will not use. Some people have an annual sale which would be a reason to keep for more than 90 days.

I am looking into switching to Saratoga and using Amazon for hosting the images. Which plan is recommended for Saratoga? If all image files are hosted on Amazon, will sytist take up more than 6000MB? This plan is only $12 a month. The next plan is for 20GB for $18 a month.

ANY of the plans on Saratoga will work. If you are only going to be hosting Sytist, the smallest plan should work and save you a few dollars. However, if you think you may want to grow (like adding a Wordpress site) for any reason then the $12 month plan would be a good start. All the heavy lifting of image storage and delivery will be done by Amazon.

The good thing about Saratoga is all plans get same service and server speed.

Thank you for the help. Also, am I correct to assume that when an S3 hosted file is deleted through sytist it is deleted from S3?

Does anyone know if Amazon's servers do the actual zipping of the folders when a client downloads their images? I'm assuming the answer is yes but I would really love confirmation!

Thanks!

Jamie,

No change from if you are hosting images on your main web server that hosts Sytist. Sytist just pulls the images from Amazon S3 storage and zips them for you.

Pridhams Studio

We currently are hosting 4 years of photos on Amazon S3, currently just under 1TB of storage for $22 per month on storage. With roughly about $5/mo on transfer (images moved into the system)

Currently working on getting down to just 3 years of photos but it takes a little while to remove large sets of photos.
