Divide By Zero - Uploading Pics

While uploading photos (already FTPed to the sy-upload folder), got a PHP error for each image: Divide By Zero line 534 in xxx-xxx-xxx.php (I don't recall the PHP module, but could do another upload if need be)...
Images were JPEG 4032x2268 (about 4MB) so maybe a memory issue. PHP setting for 512MB. I normally scale images to 2048 in pixel length, but had let these go.
Processing hung at 22 images. Quit/closed window. Ran again, hung after another 22. Quit/closed window.
Images appeared in the gallery, but the Original was listed as 0 x 0 in size. Large and small displayed correctly ( something by 1500 and something by 550 pixels respectively).
Went to gallery, deleted all images from it and system. Downsized and uploaded smaller images - worked fine as always.
A few questions - was error related to original size and/or memory available, and is there a good way to know the system limit without trial and error? Punting (closing) the upload page - and optionally going in and deleting all from the specific gallery - are there any residual file system or database artifacts or effects to worry about? I noticed when I processed the smaller images the count of processed images was still counting up from the original process, but the resulting gallery looks all fine.
Thanks
