How/where To Edit Sub-gallery Formatting?

I've gone round and round in circles but I can't find what I'm looking for.
I have created a section called weddings.
I have added a gallery. The gallery has subcategories.
I have successfully changed the design of how the gallery is displayed on the home page for weddings - it has a modified "on-photo" design.
The gallery is showing in thumbnail layout as I want it too.
The problem is with the subgallery listing. I.e., once I enter the main gallery, the menu page where it shows me what the sub galleries are. The formatting for this seems to be driven by the formatting for the "weddings" section. Ie, right now, it is displaying as "on-photo". When i change the weddings page layout design to thumbnail, the sub-category page also changes to thumbnail. I've tried this 100 different times.
What I want though, is for the main weddings page display to be the "on-photo" design, but the sub-galleries to have the thumbnail design, complete with number of photos in each section as part of the info.
Also, when it IS in thumbnail mode (ie when I've changed the weddings section settings) the background field to the thumbnail photo is much too big.
So basically the question is, where do I go to edit the sub-category design? It's not in the section settings, and it's not in the gallery settings. It's driving me nuts! Please help.
Thank you.

Sub galleries in a gallery are going to display using the "Page Display Layout" selected for the section (Weddings). So if On Photo is selected for the page display layout in Weddings, the sub galleries within the galleries are going to display the same. There is currently not an option to have the sub galleries within a gallery use a different layout than what is selected in the section.

That's a shame... there's no way of adding a bit of code to the Page Display Layout to create an exception for the sub-galleries? Or does it not understand the difference between the two types of pages?
And/or is there a way to choose a feature image for a sub-gallery?

There just isn't a way to change the layout for the sub galleries at this time.
You can select a preview photo for a sub gallery by viewing the sub gallery in the admin and clicking the preview photo icon under the thumbnail.

Great, I'd missed that, thanks.
