I have 9 people on the mailing list but it shows only one subscriber. I think all the double opt ins are turned off. do I need to require first and last names? I don't even know which one is the subscribed.

Where are you seeing there are 9 subscribers but only see 1? The mailing list is in People -> Mailing List and will show them even if double opt-in is enabled and they haven't confirmed.

I can see all nine in, people>mailing. in the list but mail chimp only sees one. I never had double opt in turned on.
