Digital Files And Tax

I've just noticed that my digital files are no longer showing tax. In Australia the sale of files is taxed just like any other order. I have ticked the 'taxable' box on the product but they still aren't showing any tax component on the invoices.

Actually, it looks like lots of my orders are not showing tax I have no idea why and haven't changed anything on my side. It's illegal for me to charge GST (which I need to do) and not show it on the invoice.

I've looked back and it seems to be completely random. Some order invoices have GST, others don't. I can't figure out why.

hi Sara, Is it possible on the "Random Orders" that the customer has actually checked the tax exempt box when they created the account? You can check that by going to the accounts and select "edit" in each account that is in question.

No, that's not it. Just checked one from yesterday and the tax exempt box in unchecked but tax was not included in their order.
(Also just to clarify, tax is not added on here, it's included in the purchase price but by law invoices need to state that it was included and how much.)

Just double checked and I do not have a tax exempt option when creating a new account (thankfully, no one is exempt here!!)

In the US, tax can be applied or exempt depending on the state the order is from. when the order is outside the state the photographer's business is in. Not sure how that applies to your location but I'd look at
Settings Tax> Tax Options> Calculate tax on billing or shipping address> Billing Address or Shipping Address

This setting will impact how taxes are collected!

I have billing address ticked and have always done. I changed from square to paypal a while back, I wonder if that's the issue. I'll change it to shipping address and see if that fixes it.

It more likely is a setting with paypal - if you haven't changed anything on Sytist, I'd be looking to my PayPal Settings!

Ok, so I think I found it.
Any order using Paypal Pro has no tax.

The PayPal pro credit card payment is not recording the VAT (GST) but it is being charged and in the total. I have fixed it and uploaded the file to your site and will fix it for future orders.

It's still missing the GST line:

Is that an order placed after I uploaded the file?

Hi Tim,

I have the same issue than Sarah. Tax seems to be apply or not, I can't found how to fix it. I saw that you did a patch, is that meaning that I will have to renew to have it?

Thanks

Daniel

Daniel, is it not being applied or is it being applied and not showing the tax line on the order?

If it is not charging tax, are the products checked as taxable when editing?

Are the customers using the same state as you are charging tax for?

If it is charging tax but not showing on the order, which payment option are you using?

Hi Tim,

is it not being applied

If it is not charging tax, are the products checked as taxable when editing? Yes they are all checked see pictures 3-4 below

Are the customers using the same state as you are charging tax for? No, but all province are at the same level see pictures 5. It could be easier if I can do it on the country, but I cant go with 14.995% it change to 15%. Yes this is a small difference, but enough to have problems with income departement.

If it is charging tax but not showing on the order, which payment option are you using? I use both Square and Paypal. It hapen randomely on both.

When someone is checking out, is the state option available? I suspect it is disabled in Settings -> Account Requirements. With no state, nothing to calculate tax on.

If that is not the case then You will need to email me the link to your Sytist admin, the admin username and password (or create me an admin account by clicking Admins in the upper right corner of the admin pages) so I can look at your settings.

Hi Tim,

Right on, the Province (state) was not mandatory. I changed it to be mendatory and I will see on next order if it work.

Thanks,

Dan
