Ideas For Keeping Track Of Passcodes For Events

Hi all, I'm just venturing into the area of passcode protected images. My scenario will be to have multiple cameras set up at an event, each capturing multiple pictures of attendees, then putting them in a Sytist gallery to be downloaded after post processing is completed.

I'm looking at the most efficient and cost effective ways to get the passcode associated with each person photographed. I read the great post started by Michael Weeks "Possible dance school workflow" that has some great ideas. The naming software he's using named 'WiPics' scans a barcode and incorporates that into the filename. It looks like that software may be abandonware, as the website contact form is broken, there is no pricing shown, and the facebook page hasn't been updated for over 3 years. (edit: I found an email address for the developer and it is supported, we've been talking.)

What are some other ways people are associating the passcode handed out at the event to the pictures that should be assigned to it? I suppose I could take a picture of it prior to each person, then manually edit the filenames afterward but that seems really labor intensive!

I use control my Nikon (great If you are a Nikon user) ... I pre prepare barcodes from the school/club database. They are imported and created in the program using a .Csv. you can include multiple fields in the metadata and choose which field is your filename.

Jim, I'd love to hear what you find. I thought the software was abandoned also. I am also working on a couple solutions and will let you know if I find anything.

Brooke,. This function/issue seems to have a lot more solutions in a Nikon than a canon!

If you're working stationary and tethered to a laptop, its pretty straightforward as you can use a cheap EBay USB scanner to scan the pre-printed code before capture and to rename files as they ingest (e.g. Station01Camera01-BARCODE-COUNTER.jpg). The software will replace BARCODE in the filename with whatever you have just scanned. Upload and Sytist can be set up to search for the passcode as the -BARCODE- data.

Open source and free include Digicamcontrol which I have used: http://digicamcontrol.com/doc/userguide/interface/barcode

Proprietary but more featured include controlmycanon which I have not: https://www.tetherscript.com/kbcmc/batch/ Also available for Nikon.

Non tethered to a laptop and mobile, your options become more much limited and expensive, and differ between data capture 'at capture time' through a hardware solution and 'post capture' data association through a software and code reading solution. Foolography is one: https://www.foolography.com/products/barcode-edition/

WiPics seems very outdated and abandoned.

We custom coded our solution as nothing available suited us.
