I've set up my Cron and the test email worked fine. But -now I'm also receiving emails every 5mins from Cron Daemon saying
CHECKING CARTStotal: 0
(PS sorry for all the questions- it must be obvious when people who don't know what they are doing are setting up for the first time!)

Go back into the cron section of your hosting control panel.
There is a setting to receive an email everytime it runs. If you don't see an option to turn that off,
Edit the cron job you created and add >/dev/null 2>&1 at the end.
So it will look something like at the end
/sy-admin/sy-cron.php >/dev/null 2>&1
That tells it to send the email to a blackhole.
