I've tried doing a database backup in the admin section, but it doesn't seem to be doing so. A backup doesn't show up in the page nor in the sy-misc folder on the server. The php is enabled for my side. How is it best to back up the side.

Backups can fail for several reasons usually from server configurations. You can check with your host and see if they are regularly making backups of your site.
