Sytist - Uploading Large Photos. Showing Up Blank

So if i upload small photos, like 100-200k, they upload great, when i upload some full size jpg's 5-7mb, they upload, but show no thumbnail and show up as blank tiny little squares, essentially just checkboxes, no thumbnail, etc..

is there a file size limit or something? any settings i need to take a look at within sytist or on my server? ( i have a dedicated server that i run).

Thanks for any help or advice.

No file size limit in Sytist, but there will be based on the server. The server may not be able to process really large files (due to memory and other things). 5-7 MB is pretty big to have the server try to process. If you can get them around 2MB, I would think that will upload fine.

its unlikely that the server would have any issue, i just upgraded it last month, quad core xeon, 16gb ram, etc..

would there be a php.ini file setting that may need changed within my sytist install, or anywhere else too look?

I appreciate any advice.

Thanks
Ryan

You can try increasing the PHP memory limit in the php.ini

memory_limit

Try around 256M or even 512M

I put it on 512, and that didnt help, it appears 2MB is about the size limit..i have taken the same photo ,same size, and adjusted the photo quality to get halfa dozen file sizes.. it upload fine at 1,9MB and fails at 2.3MB

i attached a screen shot, as you can see, i started titling them on the size, 1400k, 1900k, 2300k, and 2600k.. 2mb seems to be the failing point...

Maybe you can increase the max "post" size in the php.ini ? I didn't think about that before.

If you upload via FTP, can you process larger photos?

Also, the photo dimension is a factor too.

post size was already set to 100MB, raised it, but same result..

the server is used for huge upload, 1-2GB videos, etc regularly, so we are thinking its not a php.ini issue, but still open to suggestions... going to try the FTP upload option and see how that goes..

I don't think it is necessarily the upload part, but the processing of the photo part. When the photo is uploaded, then it processes the photo creating smaller versions & watermarking. Maybe you have access to an error log that might shed some light?

Hello,

The resizing taking place upon upload is this to create the thumbnails etc for the site? For example if the below fields were blank would effect the thumbnails on the site etc? If the fields could be blank would and not effect the function of the site could we upload more and larger images...

Thanks,
Ed

You can't make those settings blank or 0.

And creating those sizes has no effect on the size of photos you can upload because it only resizes for the large photo, then the others are produced from the large photo.

The size of the photos you can upload is completely dependent on the server and PHP settings. See this article:

Sorry my post was a little vague my idea of changing the fields to 0 or blank was for this issue you stated above;

" I don't think it is necessarily the upload part, but the processing of the photo part. When the photo is uploaded, then it processes the photo creating smaller versions & watermarking. Maybe you have access to an error log that might shed some light?"

I was thinking if we did not have the server process the sizes on upload then that would free resources up to handle more and larger images. But I didn't know if by not processing the smaller sizes on upload site in general because the site may need those small size when uploaded.

I'm having the same issue on my server and we use the FTP which works great but sometimes with just one gallery it's easier just to upload when creating the gallery.

If you are having issues uploading large photos again, I looked back at our emails where I had put your custom php.ini file into your uploadify folder. Look for those emails around December 30th.

When you upgraded, it removed that file and you will need to upload it again.

this is my current php.ini recourse through every directory I can crunch a pretty good amount of 10-15mb images currently but need just a little more sometimes..

safe_mode = off;
upload_max_filesize = 1024M
post_max_size = 1024M
max_file_uploads = 1000M
memory_limit = 4000M

For those having the same problem - I used FTP solution and that fixed it for me.

I started experiencing this problem just recently. There is a photo number and the options are listed below where the photo should be, but there is no photo. I checked the php.ini as suggested above and it is correct. Any suggestions?
