Event Photographer Question

210 posts

Hey guys we have been photographing sporting events for over 10 years. We use a software package called five minute photo during our shows for customers to view their photos and order their photos on our 10 Station viewing center.

My question for you guys who may have experience in this is that we want to utilize the full power of Sytist. Currently after the show is complete we upload all of the photos into our website for people to order after the show. What I would like to do is find a way to upload during the show and allow people to access the photos via their mobile devices or personal computers Throughout the show.

Have any of you been successful in this type of process? If so can you give me some tips on how to go about doing this? Really appreciate this forum and each of you!

I have used this a couple of times http://www.highmotionsoftware.com/products/imbatch

set to monitor your folder structure and it can then auto ftp a resized image to your server

Tim has mentioned a potential new feature that will monitor and import from a hot folder, should that happen then this sort of idea is doable.

John,
for my experience I'll never do it.
Onsite I use a server with Coppermine gallery, it would also be easy to add an access point with a router, to my LAN , to let people access the server with their mobiles, without uploading photos on my site, that would be also risky if you are in an area where wifi or 4G is not stable.
The fact that this kind of sale is based on emotions, so they have to purchase from you, but if you allow them to have such "emotions" on their mobiles, you will loose a lot of potential sales, because just with a screenshot of such photos, even with your logo, they can share it right the same moment they get them, and in this time "sharing" to get one more like on their profiles is the normality. Then they will not buy theese photos from you.
Is something to which I thought some years ago, but I didn't proceed, because there were people trying to shoot my monitors with their mobiles......and I had to label my viewing stations with a board "Shooting our monitors is an image theft".
So giving access with their mobiles is like to leave your car open with the keys inside in the worst area of a town.
My 2 cents.

Unfortunately the developer of 5 minute photo died about a year ago as far as I know. 5 minute photo is no longer supported. An alternative option is Photo Parata

Marco/Michael:
Thanks so much for your responses. It's terrible that I would like to "trust" our event participants to not screen-shot the photos from their device but I agree that it's probably something they will do. To that end I will not go forward with that idea. What is probable more troubling now is that I had no idea David (from Five Minute Photo) had passed away. I wondered what had happened recently when I went to their site and it was down. I will check out Photo Parata. Michael is it as user-friendly as 5 Minute Photo?

John,

they each have functions the other did not but Parata is easy in my books, look for http://www.miltonstreet.com/news.php

checking it out now. I'm shooting a National Horse Show at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington in July and need to get things in order. I've been the Official Photographer for them for 10 years so changing my setup will be a shock to them.

If you have in mind to change your system, why not buying another copy of systist and let in running in local? So customers will have the same experience when later you will upload photos on your site, maybe for further purchase.

That sounds like a great plan but I have no idea whatsoever how to run a local web server. I'd LOVE it though.

It is not that difficult, maybe you can hire someone doing it for you.Look for XAMPP advise on the net, once installed all you have to do is create a database with php-admin ,put the sytist folder in the htdocs folder that XAMPP create during the installation and then launch the sytist installation as you did for your site.

You guys are the best! I installed XAMMP and it’s working well. I purchased a 2nd copy of Sytist. Now the only question is how do I create the database in phpMyAdmin the directions show how to use the wizard in cpanel.

If you start XAMPP , in the panel that opens, type config ,near the PHPMyadmin tools, then follow this guide
https://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/php/php12p2.html
Of course you don't have to create tables, the sytist installer will do it for you

Marco - I know I am a pain but I'm stuck. I know I don't make the tables - so the next step is to go to my localhost site and type localhost/install but then I get an error that says I need to enter the variables manually. Am I doing that wrong?

Where did you put the sytist files?Under htdocs or hotdogs/sytist ? In the last case is localhost/sytist/install . I installed many programs in XAMPP like Wordpress,Coppermine etc and never had this so I don't know what is happening.Just try to leave the file in the sytist directory.

OK thanks I re-downloaded my install files and added then created a folder called "sytist" in my XAMMP application folder. I uploaded the installation files into that folder. I then went to install and this is the error I received:

Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

My mistake - I now have a "sytist" folder in htdocs with the install files included. On install this is the error I get:

Warning: session_start(): open(/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/sytist/sy-phpsessions/sess_e55e480032f71b81531b8d786592609d, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/sytist/install/index.php on line 4

Warning: session_start(): Failed to read session data: files (path: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/sytist/sy-phpsessions) in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/sytist/install/index.php on line 4

Warning: Use of undefined constant utf8_encode - assumed 'utf8_encode' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/sytist/sy-inc/functions.core.php on line 418

sytist Installation
The sy-config.php file not writable by the server.
You will need to manually edit the file to enter in the database variables. Please refer to the manual for more information.

After you have edited and uploaded the sy-config.php file, refresh this page.

Did you type localhost/sytist/install ? a 404 error means that files were not uploaded in the right place

Narco it's in the correct directory now but it says I need to edit the sy-config.php

Well, the only thing I can suggest you to try is to edit your sy-config file with a plain text editor (I mean has to be saved with php extensions for instance Pages is not working),and there you should insert your database name, database user and password or in case read this
http://www.picturespro.com/sytist-manual/installation/moving-into-a-sub-folder-or-changing-folder-name/
Honestly this goes beyond my knowledge, then I don't know if depends from permission rules on files...maybe it should be changed to 0777

Hey Guys:
Great news! Thanks to the guidance you have given I actually got the local installation completed successfully, including clearing the errors. All I had to do with the errors was open each php file with the error in Atom and enclose the offending term with the ' symbol. This is the best!
