I am interested in having galleries that can only be accessed if you have a direct link so they do not show on any pages and are NOT password protected. Is there a way to do this?

Just leave the status to Draft. Then it won't be listed on the website, but can still be accessed with the direct link.
You can get the link by viewing it on the website and copy the address from the address bar.

Ahh, not having galleries indexed is very useful to me indeed.
Is there any functional difference or disadvantage to having a gallery set to 'draft' rather than 'published' other than not being indexed? Draft doesn't seem like an appropriate word to me.

Draft means it is not listed on the website with other galleries or pages and is not listed in the site map. Does not mean it won't necessarily get indexed by search engines.
Published means it will be listed on the website with other content and is in the site map.
